Mashimoni Squatters Schools - Kibera

Pupils at Mashimoni Squatters Schools

There are currently 540 primary aged children and over 200 children in a secondary school which is not yet under our management.

In September 2007 Balcraig Foundation began a programme of reconstruction to transform mud classes into brick built classrooms with desks and blackboards.

Many of the Mashimoni Squatters children are Aids orphans and live in shacks with grandparents or distant relatives. A new initiative within Balcraig is the ‘Stepping Up’ programme which allows supporters to purchase school socks at 50p and school shoes at £10 for the children who attend this slum school. This initiative will greatly enhance the children’s confidence and create a more positive learning environment.

Due to the level of poverty in Kibera, children are often sent to school simply to be fed, rather than educated. The mission of this project is to promote social equality by encouraging education in a slum environment.

To sponsor one of the Mashimoni Squatters children for £65/annum or support the Stepping Up initiative please see the ‘Support us’ page.
